After Wisdom Tooth Removal
After getting your wisdom teeth removed, it’s important to follow a few key steps to ensure a smooth recovery:
Rest and Recovery: Give yourself plenty of time to rest. Avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
Manage Pain and Swelling: Use prescribed pain medications or over-the-counter pain relievers as directed. Applying an ice pack to your face can help reduce swelling.
Follow Dietary Restrictions: Stick to soft foods and avoid anything too hot or spicy. Avoid drinking through a straw for at least a week, as the suction can dislodge blood clots and impede healing.
Maintain Oral Hygiene: Gently brush your teeth, but avoid the surgical sites for the first 24 hours. After that, you can rinse with a saltwater solution to help keep the area clean.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: These can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.
Watch for Complications: Be mindful of any signs of infection or excessive bleeding. If you experience severe pain, prolonged bleeding, or fever, contact your oral surgeon.
Allergic Reaction and Drug Reaction: Each individual’s reaction to surgery varies, and the sensation of pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain. A variable amount of swelling can be expected following the surgery. This swelling usually peaks on the second day and should begin resolving on the third day. You can limit the amount of swelling you will have by using ice for the entire first day. The more ice you use the first day, the less swelling you are likely to have on the second day.
If you have specific questions or concerns, your oral surgeon will be the best resource for guidance tailored to your situation.
